Jefferson Graham’s recent article in USA TODAY provides a great discussion of some of the new (or newly popular) features in Facebook that can be particularly helpful for small businesses. He writes about the free Check-in and Nearby features, emphasizing how they spread the word about your business among Facebook friends. He also discusses Graph Search, stressing that a business must have a current address/phone number/operating hours to ensure it appears, and Promoted Posts, which is not free but can be a much more economical alternative to Google AdWords. Finally, he includes some comments from shop owner Jeff Glass, who speaks about the use of Facebook to keep his customers actively interested and involved in his business. Since the use of Facebook as a source of local business information is second only to Google Maps (per Sterling Market Intelligence), it’s not surprising that most businesses consider it essential to participate.
